How study abroad can improve your resume

7 Jul

Wow, in just 7 days I will be on a plane to the beautiful blue Caribbean to the island of Barbados to begin a 3-week study abroad program! Didn’t you just graduate though? How are you able to still study abroad? Some of you may ask. But those of you who are familiar with the University of Washington’s International Programs and Exchanges Program know that the school lets students study abroad the summer after they graduate. And, I’ll still be receiving 6 credits to complete the requirements for my Communications major, can you say perfection?

I stumbled across this article posted on the University of Washington Study Abroad FACEBOOK PAGE and it talks about how students who study abroad can use it as a huge resume improver and better prepare them for the workforce. Although this was something I already was aware of having previously studied abroad in Tahiti and Argentina, I was interested in discovering how this could aid me in my upcoming Barbados Exploration Seminar. The article states that:

Of the 3,400 respondents, a majority reported that their study abroad experience:

• Gave them increased self confidence (96-98%*)

• Had a lasting effect on their world view (95-97%*)

• Helped them better understand their own cultural values and biases (98%)

• Continues to influence interactions with people from different cultures (94%)

It goes on to say that “Because of the challenges of living in a foreign country (e.g., different cultural norms, adapting to a new and unfamiliar environment, learning to speak and communicate in a foreign language, new academic expectations to meet, etc.) these study abroad alumni can be very competitive applicants for a number of different jobs, whether those jobs are internationally-focused or not.” It goes on to say more about how study abroad can improve your resume, Check out the article below!
